Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the name for a network of valuable habitats that covers the whole of the EU. Natura 2000 is based on two laws, the Bird directive and the Habitat directive. Together, they are meant to provide for the protection of wildlife in Europe.
Protection of Natura 2000 network is one of the main issues that rises in cases where environment is at stake. In order to see what are the main problems in implementation of Natura 2000 legal regime, in 2006 and 2007 J&E carried out comparative legal analyses about transposition of Habitats Directive in Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary and Slovakia, and collected case studies about typical practice. J&E analyses show that there are similar and commonly recognized problems in the Member States that J&E analysed – this concerns the cases begun before 2004 accession date for new Member States, but also cases initiated after the accession.

Currently, J&E is working on Natura 2000 issues through its members on national level legal work, trying to influence practice in real cases and collect further information about implementation.
J&E 2006 and 2007 case studies, legal analysis and position papers on the issue are available for downloading.
